چکیده

Understanding the service quality of Internet paths is of great importance for both the service provider and the user. Motivated by this and particularly the aim of extracting such information from a given dataset collected through end-to-end measurement, this paper presents a novel approach, called SCI (Service-quality Characterization of Internet-path). Specifically, SCI utilizes delay and loss measurements collected from vantage points at the two ends of an Internet path. It transforms collected probes into performance signals, namely aggregate delay, average delay and aggregate loss signals. On the aggregate delay and average delay signals, abrupt changes are detected using Principal Component Pursuit (PCP). The detected abrupt changes in aggregate delay and average delay, together with the loss information, are further mapped as different types of events causing degradations and failures in the service within the path. Predicated on the set of identified such service-level events, SCI characterizes the service quality of the measured Internet path using three metrics, namely availability, stability and fatigue. The proposed approach has been systematically evaluated on the dataset collected from a real operational environment. The results show that SCI achieves good accuracy in detecting abrupt changes in aggregate delay and average delay and identifying service-level events, boosting the feasibility of service quality assessment of an Internet path based exclusively on end-to-end measurement. 2014 Elsevier B.V. Providing a Multidimensional Measurement Model for Assessing Mobile Telecommunication Service Quality (MS-Qual)

Because of the need to develop specific measurement scales for different services industries, this study aimed to empirically develop a reliable and valid model specifically for measuring mobile telecommunication service quality. A multidimensional measurement model (MS-Qual) has been proposed based on an extensive literature review and then, to assess the model validity, convergent and discrim...

An efficient Gateway Discovery and Selection Approach Based on Quality of Service Attributes

The connection of ad-hoc networks to the Internet is typically established via gateways. To start an Internet connection, in a first step gateways have to be discovered by the mobile nodes within the ad-hoc cluster. Several gateway selection schemes have been proposed that select gateway nodes based on a single Quality of Service parameter, link capacity, link quality, path availability period,...

Class Mapping for End-to-End Guaranteed Service with Minimum Price over DiffServ Networks

SUMMARY Differentiated-services model has been prevailed as a scal-able solution to provide quality of service over the Internet. Many researches have been focused on per hop behavior or a single domain behavior to enhance quality of service. Thus, there are still difficulties in providing the end-to-end guaranteed service when the path between sender and receiver includes multiple domains. Fur...

Finding Alternate Paths in the Internet: A Survey of Techniques for End-to-End Path Discovery

The Internet provides physical path diversity between a large number of hosts, making it possible for networks to use alternative paths when one path fails to deliver the required Quality of Service. However, for various reasons, many established protocols (e.g. de facto Internet inter-domain routing protocol, Border-Gateway Protocol BGP) do not fully exploit such alternate paths. This paper su...

RSVP and Integrated Services in the Internet : a tutorial

The growing use of multimedia communication applications with specific bandwidth and real-time delivery requirements has created the need for an Integrated Services Internet in which traditional best-effort datagram delivery can coexist with additional enhanced Quality Of Service(QOS) delivery classes. Such classes provide data flows with QOS commitments with regard to bandwidth, packet loss an...
